Sushmita graduated in Fine Arts from the Delhi college of Art. She held group shows in Delhi and Kolkata in the early 1980s and worked under the tutelage of eminent artistes like Jatin Das and Dhiraj Chowdhury. Her studies included conservation of paintings at the National Gallery of Modern Art in Delhi under Sukanto Basu.
